WebSomething just feels bad about cutting so many beautiful switches! I am very new to mechanical keyboards and currently have a GMMK TKL which I plan to use until my Ikki68 GB comes through this Summer. I have a set of Boba U4's I've been planning on using in both boards, but the GMMK TKL has a 3 pin PCB and the Ikki68 has a 5 pin PCB. WebYou can use either 3 or 5 pin switches. Typically 5 pins are for boards with no plates. Those 2 legs add structural rigidity so it won't move around when soldering. 2 Reply [deleted] • 3 yr. ago Yes it does, I have the same and I use 3 pin switches it just means it supports both 5 pin and 3 pin 1 Reply N1kolajRK • 3 yr. ago
3-pin vs 5-pin for hotswap...much of a difference? - reddit
WebIt's a bit easier to properly put in a 5-pin switch into the hot-swap without bending the contacts. Also, on boards and plates which don't hold switches horribly well in place it also helps stability/non-tilting of the switch. Overall, gains are marginal, but I generally prefer 5-pin switches if hot-swap PCB allows. So nothing much it's just a ... WebSwitches are either 5 or 3. Center pole + two metal switch pins = 3. Add two smaller plastic side poles and you have 5. 5 pins are needed for PCB mount. Plate mount may use either 5 or 3, but some PCBs only support 3. If you need to go from 5 to 3, just clip off the two small ones with nail clippers or a flush cutter. Don’t clip the metal ones! network educate
Plate Mounted VS PCB Mounted Switches - Switch and Click
WebIn addition to 3-pin, there is also a 5-pin design that comes with two additional plastic pegs to help secure the switch to the PCB better. Hot-swappable keyboards typically come in a 5-pin or 3-pin design as well. With a 5-pin design, all switches will be compatible with the keyboard, regardless of if the switches are 3-pin or 5-pin.
