WebFeb 20, 2015 · Derating the trailer is a myth that won't win any battles with DOT. They go by the VIN tag, not what the registration says. The only way to skate that is to have a 10k trailer built with "upgraded" 6K axles, but the printed GVWR still says 10k. I've seen it done, but not commonplace.

The weight rating may be lowered or raised, and certified as such, by the maufacturer or a certified vehicle modifier such as a van conversion company. My dilema is that an state trooper told me that in Iowa you not only have to have the unit (s) (truck & trailer) inspected, but also have to have a CDL Class A to pull the thing onto a highway.
WebNov 8, 2012 · Yes you can derate the GVWR of a trailer in IL. I derated a 14K trailer to 10K. If I remember correctly you can only change one or two weight classifications. You need to go to the Secretary of State office, pay a fee, and fill out a form. Do it when you tag expires or they'll hit you up for a half year tag too. Nov 6, 2012 #3 M mikehaugen
